Petriti
The village of Petriti in Corfu is a charming coastal destination that offers a traditional Greek fishing experience. Today, Petriti stands as a picturesque Greek fishing village and a harbor for fishermen coming from all over the Mediterranean.
Fishermen from Petriti often embark on multi-day fishing trips, traveling far into the sea to bring back their catch. If you’re fortunate enough to be there when they return, you’re likely to enjoy some of the freshest fish you’ve ever tasted.
A row of fish tavernas lines the coastline, serving not only fish but also other local delicacies for those who may not fancy seafood. Across the bay, you’ll find the salt pans, a unique feature of the southern part of Corfu. Despite being about 5 nautical miles from the coast, the depth of the water in the salt pans does not exceed one meter.
Close to Petriti, there is a small island that a local resident has turned into his private utopia. Petriti is accessible by two beautiful routes, either along the coastal road from Mesongi, passing by several small harbors, or from the south through Argirades. If arriving by sea, be mindful of which pier you choose, as each one is designated for a specific taverna to avoid any unintentional conflicts.
Petriti exudes tranquility, reminiscent of old times for those who have been vacationing in Greece for many years, long before the era of fast food and loud pop music. Cats and dogs nap under the sun, the sea gently laps at the wooden decks of the restaurants, and the shallow waters make it safe even for small children. Petriti offers a glimpse into a simpler, slower-paced Greece, a place where time seems to have stood still.
